Mozambique visa costs for South Africans in 2023

1. Visitor Visa

These countries signed a visa waiver, which was put into effect on the 1st of May 2023. The visa waiver grants the 14 SADC countries access to enter each other’s countries and stay for 90 days without a visa, at no cost, as long as you have a valid passport. Your passport must at least have a minimum of 6 months validity remaining from the day you arrive in Mozambique. 

Although you are allowed and able to travel to Mozambique as a South African with your passport alone, if you want to relocate to Mozambique or you are there for other purposes other than visiting, then you need to get the appropriate visa, which may have its own costs.

2. Tourist and business visas

Business visas were required before the visa waiver came into effect on the 1st of May 2023. Before then if you are a South African passport holder, you were granted entry to tour Mozambique for 30 days or visit for 90 days at no cost. But if you were there on business purposes then you had to apply for a business visa.

3. Work Visa

You require a visa as a South African if you intend to work in Mozambique. The visa can be applied for either online, at the Mozambican embassy in South Africa or upon entry once you arrive in Mozambique. The visa issued then will be valid for 30 days and will have to be converted to residence authorisation before the 30 days is over. The work visa costs an average of R5000.

The following are the general required documents for a work visa:

  • 2 x Passport size photos. 
  • Address of the place you’ll be staying at while working in Mozambique.
  • Valid passport for 6 months. 
  • 1 Work Visa application form. 
  • Permanent residence.
  • Work Contract Letter from the employer. 
  • Criminal  Record.

4. Study Visa

If you are a South African and want to study in Mozambique, you need to apply for a study visa. The institution you’ll be studying at should be an official recognised educational institution. If you are on a student visa you are not allowed to work while there. the student visa is valid for 12 months and can be extended for another 12 months and costs around R2000.

The following are the general required documents for a study visa:

  • A correctly completed and signed Mozambique student visa application form.
  • A valid passport that has six months remaining.
  • 2 x Passport size photos. 
  • Proof of paid fees.
  • Address of the place you’ll be staying at while studying in Mozambique.

5. Visa for Residence purposes

If you are a South African national and intend to live in Mozambique, then you need to apply for a residence visa. This visa allows you one entry and valid for 30 days and renewable up to 60 days. The visa cost is R5000.

These are the requirements for this type of visa:
